If you've ever seen a group of four guys wearing matching clothes and singing what you think is nutty or downright strange/dumb-looking, chances are it was barbershop. For music junkies out there like me, barbershop music is generally a capella and sung in quartets. While you can hear ladies screaming over the really good men's quartets and even choirs (oh yes, they DO exist), a women's version, known as Sweet Adeline's exists. If you've never heard one, the video on the right should give you a pretty good idea of how amazing this style of singing can sound. Mixed barbershop singing is also legitimate. In the music world, any style (except bad rap) is quickly accepted by the public audience, which means the stuffy suits upstairs in the judge seats quickly follow suit.

C-C chromatic pitchpipe. Generally, an F-F, G-G, or A-A can be used to help tune novice tenors and leads. The basses usually start on the lower octave or a third above/below. Nearly all B.S. performances are begun by giving the key OR starting root pitch on this "instrument."
