No, I'm talking about the sport. Ever seen the old pirate movies where the hero dodges a sword by just a hair? Well, those fights are staged and the weapons aren't sharp, however, you get the same feel when you're dodging, blocking, advancing, and attacking your opponent in fencing. You have three events: Foil, Sabre, and Épée. Foil is one of the more restrictive events in which footwork and scoring are the most difficult. It is the lightest weapon, and it is exclusively for thrusting. The only place you can score is the opponent's main body area including the chest and torso. Épée is also a thrusting weapon, but more areas can be hit. This is considered one of the easier events because of the drop in difficulty. Sabre is the only event in which sideswipes and edge contacts count, arguably making this event the easiest to attain victory in. To counteract this, you can only score hits above the waist. |
On the right you will find one of the best matches in the Olympics in Athens. No, these rather aggressive and high-risk maneuvers are not only used by the pros. Wondering if the swords broke? No, they bent before contact. When I said that you get the same feel as a medieval or pirate sword fight, I was not kidding. If a match goes longer than five minutes, then chances are both contenders will become exhausted. Stamina, mind-tactics, and taunting are all as important as speed and general skill with a sword. Please note the clothing which looks a lot like tights. Believe it or not, that weighs twice as much as your normal clothing. different clothes are worn for different events so that certain parts conduct (target areas) to say who won a certain event when a lightning-fast strike occurred. |
